Why are Transition to Kindergarten Events Important?
Entering Kindergarten is one of the most important educational steps in a child’s life. Transition to Kindergarten initiatives benefit children by decreasing anxiety and increasing their enthusiasm for school. But equally important, well-designed transition events foster positive linkages between school and home and increase parent involvement; research shows that both are indicators of long-term school success.
Many parents may not have had a positive school experience. Such parents will especially benefit from a positive transition experience. Well-designed transition events are welcoming. When parents feel welcomed and their role in their child’s education is affirmed, they are more likely to–
- Volunteer and participate in activities
- Become “ambassadors” for your school by sharing positive impressions
- Respond to school activities and assignments
- Have a positive relationship with teachers and other school personnel
